It's a nice speed boost, which depending on the scenario, could be a nice boost for your end-user.įeel like you haven't quite totally grasped async/await and Promises? I publish new posts every week or two about JavaScript and Node.js, including dealing with asynchronous scenarios. And if you haven't tried using Promise.all() before, try it out next time you have a scenario where you don't need all your async functions to execute in order. The async function declaration declares an async function where the await keyword is permitted within the function body. Next time you need to remember how to execute the two types, reference this post. map ( itm => someFn (itm ) ) ) // 0s // 2s (roughly) - 'first', 'second', 'third' Wrapping up const asyncA = async ( ) => // 0s // 2s - 'first' // 4s - 'second' // 6s - 'third' // concurrently await Promise. Or maybe you've been trying to execute them concurrently, but they end up executing one-at-a-time, in series. Maybe you've been trying to execute them in series, but they end up executing out of order. request.get( '').When dealing with an array of async/await functions (which return Promises), it can be tricky to figure out how to execute them all in series (one-at-a-time) and how to call them in concurrently (not one-at-a-time, executed during overlapping time periods). catch() method, which worked, but could cause confusion determining which Promises it caught exceptions for. This linear approach lets us get back to using the try.catch statement for handling errors. ![]() There are more benefits than just being able to use traditional control-flow like loops and conditionals. This way you can take advantage of the speed of parallel execution and the simplicity of await. Let ibody = await request.get(issuesOptions) Request.get(options).then( function( body) Var request = require( 'request-promise') Using the Promise-based approach, you have to make the request and get the result back within the callback you pass to. In this case, you'd likely use the great request-promise library. Let's say you want to use Github's REST API to find the number of stars a project has. While a great improvement, Promises leave us wanting even more simplification. They've been a great solution to the problem of callback hell, but unfortunately they don't solve all of the asynchronous problems. The concept of a "promise" in JavaScript has been around for a while, and it's been usable for years now thanks to 3rd party libraries like Bluebird and q, not to mention the recently added native support in ES6. Throughout this article we'll take a look at what's wrong with Promises, how the new await feature can help, and how you can start using it right now. It all but eliminates the problem of callback hell, and even let's us use control-flow structures around our asynchronous code. Although it's basically just syntactic sugar on top of Promises, these two keywords alone should make writing asynchronous code in Node much more bearable. ![]() ![]() One of the most exciting features coming to JavaScript (and therefore Node.js) is the async/ await syntax being introduced in ES7. ![]() In addition to ASICs, it works with a variety of hardware including FPGAs, GPUs, and CPUs.įor those using Windows 10, installing CGMiner may pose a challenge, but for those familiar with the process, it is easy to use.
